Teaching
Units Taught
I am currently teaching third-year units on financial accounting and accounting theory within the Professional Accounting major of the Bachelor of Commerce degree in the Murdoch Business School (MBS). They are:
- BUS256 Contemporary Financial Accounting (Semester 1 – 2008 student enrolment 138 plus 16 offshore students at KDU Malaysia)
- BUS310 Corporate Governance & Accountability (Semester 2 – 2007 student enrolment 131 plus 25 offshore students at KDU Malaysia)
I have taught a number of different units in the past nineteen years of my teaching experience at Murdoch University (MU). These have included foundation units (an original unit that is now no longer offered: A110 Rationality, Conflict and Power; and, FDN130 Age of Information) as well as units in first-year accounting; first-year finance; business management concepts; business communication; management accounting; financial accounting; public sector accounting; international accounting; accounting theory; and also, postgraduate accounting for managers.
Teaching Development and Awards
Leadership Role - Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) – from December 2007
This is an evolving role that I was given in December of 2007 as part of the overall University academic restructuring that took place as Murdoch University moved from three Divisions to six Faculties with sixteen Schools.
I expect the role to develop not as a line management function but to have responsibility for fostering and encouraging effective improvement in teaching and learning practises with MBS. This will be critically important in the area of developing students’ abilities and skills in communication; group work; problem solving; and, critical thinking. The type of leadership role here is more one of coach and mentor to help other colleagues to understand and implement ‘best practice’ approaches to teaching and learning.

Evidence of Contributions to Effective Teaching
- Instrumental in setting up the graduate attributes mapping project that commenced in 2002 and which helps to identify the strengths and weakness in teaching outcomes in MBS as well as document ‘best’ teaching practices.
- Nominated for Vice Chancellor Excellence in Teaching Awards in Semester 1, 2002 and Semester 1, 2007
- Focuses teaching on a ‘learning to learn’ approach using discipline-based teaching materials.
- Active, collaborative contributor to accounting discipline group teaching developments and curriculum changes.
- Effective and high quality teacher with consistently high student unit and teaching evaluations from 1999 to 2007.
- My overall mean scores in unit surveys for the key questions related to ‘quality of teaching’ and ‘quality of the unit’ from 1999-2007 are above average over a sustained period of time despite high teaching workloads. My teaching surveys over the same period also have consistently high scores.
- These results were achieved despite high unit coordination workloads in the past seven years—onshore and offshore.
- Made positive and significant improvements to teaching (reflected in the results above) as the result of student unit evaluation of C160 Introduction to Accounting in semester 1 1998.
- Played a major role in the Commerce program in teaching leadership and teaching development.
- Inaugural Chair (Teaching and Learning Committee) – School of Commerce – 1998 to 1999.
- Significant role in the development and implementation of the two foundation units in the history of the School (A110 Rationality, Conflict and Power and FDN130 Age of Information) – see section 3d.
